Modica handmade ice creams - Antica Gelateria Rizza

A journey into taste

The specialties that over time have become real traditions are:
the “pezzo duro”, a trunk shaped ice-cream, typical of the celebrations in honor of San Pietro in Modica; ”la cassata di don Peppino”; the delicious "semifreddo alla spumone" made with sponge cake and coffee spumone called the "prince of semifreddi"; the tasty "ice cream pies" 10 centimeters thick; and even its unique granita and cremolate, with strawberry, peach, red mulberries, almond flavors and Modica chocolate.

But the products that made it very famous were the “cono turco” and the “pinguino”, a hazelnut-flavored stick ice cream covered with a thin but crunchy layer of dark chocolate. But there is more: his Modica chocolate and ice creams had something special, something different from others, an added value that can be interpreted by one word "Passion"; enough to let talk that famous writers such as Gesulado Bufalino, who in one of his letters wrote:

<<…ce ne volevano di granite per impietosire l’estate, Cecilia, che aveva ripudiato la Coca Cola, faceva alt. Ogni volta prima di partire per la marina, alla pasticceria Rizza, aspirava con la cannuccia l’elisire gelato, dipingendosi in viso d’una delizia quasi impudica>>

Delicacies for the palate

Among the artisan ice creams by Antica Gelateria Rizza in Modica, the “cono turco” and the “pinguino”, a hazelnut-flavored stick ice cream, covered with a crunchy and thin layer of dark chocolate, are two important protagonists of the local gastronomy. But Antica Dolceria Rizza's history is closely linked to the production of traditional Modica chocolate: hundreds of hundreds of chocolate bars were baked inside the well-equipped laboratory, with a unique and irresistible taste (with cinnamon, vanilla, and chili pepper, carob and even local citrus fruits).

The master Giuseppe Rizza, thanks to the experience gained over the years, transforms today Modica chocolate into ice creams, sorbets and granita with a unique taste and traditional flavor.
